Andrew Sharp outlines the early life and voyages of the famous Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, and the general European exploration of the South Pacific and Australia up to 1642. He then follows detailed studies of Tasman's main voyages of 1642-3 and 1644, during which he made outstanding contributions including the first circumnavigation of Australia (without realising it, landing in southern Tasmania) to discovery in the South Pacific, including New Zealand. The book gathers in one volume all available translations: the Haalbos-Montanus account; Tasman's journal; the Sailor's journal of the voyage of 1642-3; some gleanings from Nicolaas Witsen concerning Tasman's two main voyages; and some suggestions concerning the significance and relationships of various charts deriving from those voyages. (ISBN 0198215363 not printed in book, assigned later.).
