First edition, first issue binding (binding A). VG+. Small octavo (6¾x4½ inches). Pp. iv, 231. Title printed in black and red. Publisher's green beveled cloth decoratively stamped in black and gold, yellow coated ends.This collection of essays on bird was Burroughs's second book, his first book of writings on nature and natural history. Burroughs was the prominent 19th century American literary naturalist for whom the Burroughs Medal (the highest award in this country for writing in natural history) is named. Some edgewear to top front and top back boards, tips, and spine. Light spotting to front cover. Gift inscription in 1871 on FFEP, otherwise a clean and bright copy.
