About This Item
Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1961. hardcover. Fergusson, Bernard : The Watery Maze: The Story of Combined Operations. New York : Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1961. First American edition/First impression. Size is octavo (8vo), 9.25"/23.3 cm h. Bound in publisher's forest green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Glossy color pictorial dj. Front endpapers: B&w&red map: Combined Operations - France, North Africa, the Mediterranean. Rear endpapers: B&w&red map: Operation Neptune/France 1944. 445 numbered pp, plus seven blank to end; an additional six sheets/12 pp of b&w photos are scattered, unpaginated, through text. Author's foreword, 17 chaps, appendices (list of code names/objectives; abbrev; bibliography), index. Many b&w maps scattered throughout. Condition notes: a very nice copy of the first American edition. Binding tight and square, spine ends rolled, a bit of soiling/spotting (not foxing) to textblock edges; interior tanned but clean/unmarked. Unclipped DJ slightly tattered with numerous small chips and tears, esp at folds. To be fair, this is the story of ALLIED combined operations in WWII - the title staking a too-bold claim. Still, a valuable study by a veteran of the operations. We personally inspect every book we offer.
