HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents the Complete late Nineteenth Century Boston edition of THE WAVERLY NOVELS by Sir Walter Scott. One of several editions produced by DeWolfe, Fiske and Co., this one contains all 26 of the novels in a 12-volume format, overall totaling 10,980 pages, including the original introductions, @125 woodcut illustrations plus editors' notes, appendices and indices. 5" x 7 5/8", the overall condition of the collection is Near Fine. Pages = Near Fine, only marks being prominent owner sticker in front of each volume (printed "John Venn," quite possibly the famous mathematician!?) and some staining to outer edges, very tight and sharp, no tearing, very little aging. A small paper containing a handwritten poem (by John Venn!?) is laid in one of the volumes. Covers (dark red and black embossed design, picture of author and title in gold gilt on front, publisher cartouche and particulars on spine in gold gilt) = Very Good Plus. Noted book appraiser James Beattie has assigned a value of $375 - $400 to the collection. Price is for all 12 volumes. Additional shipping charge will apply.

Description:
Paris: Vaugirard, 1907. A lovely copy of this first edition, with lengthy gift inscription and unrecorded poem. Attractive red half leather binding with marbled boards. Attractive gilt decoration to the spine. There is cracking / splitting to the top edge of the front board, and it is in danger of becoming detached. Marbled endpapers and ex libris of Yves Refoule. Legrand has inscribed a 12 line poem and gift inscription to his friend Refoule. In addition, there are a few handwritten annotations and corrections to the text of the poems. It would appear that these were corrections made by Legrand. 30 pages. Music hall administrator, critic and historian, a specialist in circus and music-hall performances between the wars, Legrand collaborated closely with Jean-Marcel Chabrier and they produced many works as Andre Legrand Chabrier. Bel exemplaire de cette première édition, avec une longue inscription de cadeau et un poème non enregistré. Jolie reliure demi-cuir rouge à plats marbrés. Jolie… Read More

PAGE DISCOLOURATION DUE TO AGE.NO MARKS BUT PRIOR OWNERS NAME ON INSIDE COVERSome reviewers were outraged by Ann Vickers when it first appeared in 1933. "Persons unused to horrid and filthy things had better stay at a safe distance from this book," wrote one. Lewis's Ann Vickers is a complex character: a strong-minded prison superintendent dedicated to enlightened social reform, she also seeks to fulfill herself as a sexual being. Ann Vickers is in all respects her own person, standing up to the confining rules of her society.

Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son.
