About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1946). First Edition. Hardcover. [small stain on fore-edge, otherwise a nice clean book with only minimal shelfwear; jacket has small tears at most corners, about 1/2" paper loss at top of spine (slightly affecting "W" in title), shallow chipping along top edge of rear panel, vertical crease in front flap]. "You are invited to meet Dorothea -- a lovely young bud on an old New England family tree. It is a compliment to be invited. For Dorothea surrounds herself only with interesting, amusing people. She is humbly grateful that the family into which she was born, and the Harvard faculty circle in which she moves, comprise the most cultivated people in the world." She sounds perfectly insufferable, if you ask me, and apparently the author thinks so, too, as the blurb goes on to also invite the reader "to witness the awakening of Dorothea [who] like the princess in the fairy tale, [is] a sleeping beauty" -- ready to be changed "from a charming prig into a genuine human being [through] the love and influence (good and bad) of four men, including a gentleman, a seducer, and a rough diamond." .
