About This Item

Signed on page with forward: Feb. 18, 1964 With best wishes, Fred Schwengel
(Schwengel was the President of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

This book was nearly completed by the printer when President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The first bound copy was to be presented to him on December 4th. One of the last few pages of the book are a moving tribute to JFK. It states, "Thus he warmly approved of the objectives of the United States Capitol Historical Society. He served as a member of its Honorary Board of Trustees."

The Capitol Historical Society was chartered under the laws of the District of Columbia on August 8, 1962. It is my belief that this is the first edition of We, The People ever produced. I have not found any evidence of anything earlier. It has been published every year since.
