About This Item

New York:: Knopf,, 1981.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in Fine unclipped dust jacket David Lewis documents the spirit and substance of New York City's black center during its best years. Lewis traces the history of blacks in Harlem from 1905, when they began moving uptown, to the riot of 1935. These were the crazy years in Harlem in the 1920s where the poets, musicians, intellectuals and entrepreneurs put the "jazz" in the Jazz Age. This is the history of Harlem's renaissance as the focal point of poets, novelists, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, mansions, nightclubs, dives, glamour and decadence in the years following the First World War.
