London: Consumer Association "Which ?" Magazine. A rare long run of all the earliest issues, from commencement in 1957 through to 1982. Paperbacks, as issued, some a little worn, a few covers detached. The value of this rare twenty-five year run to the social historian or the researcher into shopping history, family and home finances, fashion, consumerism etc, can hardly be under-estimated. [The first issue of this ground-breaking publication contained : Electric Kettles, Sunglasses, Aspirin, Cake Mixes, Scouring Powders, non-iron cotton, and tests on the Austin A35 and the Standard Ten cars]. Fashions, consumer demands etc can easily be traced, as may be noted in just a few of the articles : Comparative heating costs - 1960. Loans for houses - 1961. Car safety belts - 1962. Petrol -1964. Savings and investments - 1967. North Sea gas - 1967. Supermarkets - 1971. Train Services - 1977. This collection also includes the a Cumulative Index 1957 - 1976, the first issues of Handyman Which ? 1971 - 1982 (four issues per year), a copy of Eirlys Roberts' book "Which? Consumers Association 1957-82", and a few other pieces. [Please note - this set weighs 18 kilos before packing. Extra postage costs will re necessary. It will be EXTREMELY expensive to send this overseas, so please enquire before ordering.]. First Edition. Paperback. Good.

London / Birmingham: Longman And Co, Paternoster Row / J Drake, New Street, Birmingham, ND. First edition. Pamphlet. Very Good. pp. 80, + fold-out table, Expenditure of a Working Man. Disbound slim pamphlet in very good condition, some fraying around spine, some turning to a few page corners at bottom, but a clean, firm copy with sound binding. The TP lists Frederick Hill as the author, not Frederic as he was baptised. Hill was one of the most notable Victorian prison reformers and politically involved throughout his career, including working towards the Reform Bill of 1832. The pamphlet would have been written just prior to Hill joining the Birmingham Political Union, which campaigned for the extension of the vote. His brother Rowland, inventor of the postage stamp, had an equally illustrious career. To tp, in a Victorian hand, in pencil, 'First Composition in print by Frederic Hill' and in ink, the date 1828. The date is notable, as there is no date to the TP and the BL - and other holdings -… Read More
