Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. Kota Kinabalu, 2018. Very well illustrated, large thick octavo, pp xvi, 703, a very good new copy in dustwrapper. Very heavy - extra postage may be needed. [In this book, Dr Seow-Choen lists 170 species, from 64 genera or subgenera, with 60 new species or subspecies and 4 new genera from Sumatra. He also lists 1 replacement name, 25 new synonyms, 19 new name combinations, 8 revised statuses, and 22 lectotype designations. This is the first book to list all the species of stick insects known from Sumatra. The people of Indonesia are very friendly and their cultures are incredibly attractive. The range of widllife habitats are immense; only of those from Sundaland, Wallacea and Gondwandaland but also including plants and animals from high and icy montane forests to hot and humid mangrove swamps. The animal life in Indonesia therefore is wonderfully diverse. All entomologists, naturalists, nature photographers and indeed anyone with the remotest interest in nature will find this book indispensible for… Read More

Description:
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1935. A very attractive copy of a book tough-to-find in First Edition, especially in dust jacket and in collectible condition as nice as this. SEE PHOTOS. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket. The jacket is complete and its colors are still very bright and attractive. NOT price clipped ($1.75). The publisher has blacked out two mistaken words (i.e. "and crocodiles") on the jacket's front inner flap as crocodiles are not mentioned in the book (but alligators are). Protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve (temporarily removed for photos to reduce glare). This is an extremely appealing, pretty copy. All pages are creamy white, clean, crisp and unmarked. The jacket art depicts a brown running deer and several greenish waterfowl on the wing. The jacket has minor wear at the corners and at the bottom of the rear panel there are two half-inch closed tears and one 2" closed tear. The front panel of the jacket has a few faint brown… Read More
