Within the Barbed Wire Fence:: A Japanese man's account of his internment in Canada
by Ujo Nakano

- Hardcover
The author tells his story of upheaval, civil disobedience, jailing, and months within the double barbed wire fence. It is a personal account of one of the blackest episodes in Canada's history - the forced evacuation during the second world ware fo 21,000 Japanese from British Columbia. But it more than a social document. The author is an accomplished poet, a master of the traditional tanka verse form, and even in this period of anxiety and sadness his vision was illuminated by the natural splendour surrounding the camps. He turned to writing poetry for sustenance, and several of the tanka he composed appear in the text. 126 pages.
