I have a copy of this cookbook and as the previous reviewer stated, it has an overview of substitutions that could be used during the WWII rationing of butter, and namely sugar, butter, tire, and.... gas. It brought back memories of my childhood when my mother cooked frugally, but tastefully. I don't remember ever turning down any of her "money saving" dishes. And we always rinsed, and crushed the food cans to save them for the war effort.

I have a copy of this book, and it is a wonderful history book as well as a great primer for new cooks. The WWII edition has a note in the beginning which discusses substitutions which may need to be made due to wartime rationing of, for example, sugar.
