About This Item
Philadelphia: Grigg & Elliot. Fair. 1839. Hardcover. Fairly early US edition of Sterne's collected works--Sterne died in 1768. This book was Stereotyped by J. Howe. Frontis portrait from a painting by Joshua Reynolds and engraved by the prominent artist and engraver, James Barton Longacre. This book is a candidate for rebacking, as the contents are tight with no loose pages or signatures; marbled end papers and the edges are all gilt--but the book lacks a spine, and the brown, blind stamped covers are detached. Foxing throughout, but very legible. Previous owner oval name stamp on blank front preliminary page. Contains Tristram Shandy, Letters, etc. Printed in double columns. ; Frontis portrait; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 416 pages .
