About This Item
London: John Murray, 1823 - 1875. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 5.5". None. A handsomely-bound collection of the works of Lord Byron. Including 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage', 'The Corsair', 'Lara', 'The Siege of Corinth', and many others. With an engraved frontispiece of Byron to the first volume. Volumes I-IV state, 'In four volumes' and are dated 1823, whilst volumes V and VI state, 'In six volumes' and are dated 1875. Byron exercised a marked influence on Continental literature and art, and his reputation as a poet is higher in many European countries than in Britain or America, although not as high as in his time, when he was widely thought to be the greatest poet in the world. Bookplate of James A. Richardson to front pastedowns. Complete in six volumes. In calf bindings. Externally, smart, with just a few marks, and some slight rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and quite clean, though with some foxing to the endpapers and a few instances of spotting. Previous owner's ink stamps to title pages and front pastedowns.
