Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Co. [at the Riverside Press], 1906. The Manuscript Edition. Fine/The Houghton Mifflin company published the Manuscript Edition of Thoreau's writings in "standard" brown cloth, but a few deluxe sets were bound in 3/4 levant as offered here. The leather-bound sets come with 40 full-page illustrations that are not present in the standard issue, including a color frontispiece and a "carbon photograph" of a flower in each volume. The manuscript leaf included in this set is from "Cape Cod" (1865), published just after Thoreau's death. It is a passage that interrupts a discourse to muse momentarily on the Cape's prehistory independent of civilization. "It was even then Cape and Bay, --ay, the Cape of Codfish and the Bay of Massachusetts, perchance." This particular passage (which differs somewhat from the published version) is sculpted with penciled corrections.. 23 cm; 20 volumes. 3 portraits, 141 illustrations, most of them photogravure plates by Herbert W. Gleason of scenes described by Thoreau, including two frontispieces in each volume. 20 of the photogravures are hand-colored. Manuscript leaf in Thoreau's hand with several pencil corrections (apparently by the author) bound into volume 1. Printed tissue guards. Red publisher's logo on each title page. Printed on white wove paper watermarked 'Thoreau' within a holly wreath. Bound in 3/4 green levant morocco extra over marbled paper, ruled in gilt, spines with raised bands in six panels decorated and titled in gilt; top edge gilt. Green silk ribbon. Limited to 600 copies, this is set #410, numbered in each volume, signed "Houghton Mifflin Co." on the limitation page. Reference: Borst, B3. Pristine condition.

Description:
First edition. Quarto, full limp cowhide. One of the finest and rarest of Texas imprints, and one that has been referred to as the 'black tulip' of western fine printing. Of legendary rarity and highlighted in Al Lowman's The Printing Arts in Texas, this copy is accompanied by a letter from the author to Dudley Dobie concerning the book's origins and the great expense required to print it. The book and letter were owned by W. Thomas Taylor, author of Texfake, a book which exposed the theft and forgery of early Texas documents in the 1970s; the publisher of Bookways, a quarterly devoted to book arts; and the designer/printer of over fifty books. Printed recto only, the book was written, designed and the type set by Ed W. Bateman, a one time newspaper reporter (hence the title) and a wildcatter of great success and failure. This book was created during one of his periods of great success. The text and illustrations are printed in two colors and the subject matter ranges from a father's implacable… Read More
