About This Item
Hardcover. Near Fine. Nine volumes . Complete set . Beautifully rebound volumes in full leather . Volumes I and III - IX are published by H. W. Derby , New York , in 1861 . These volumes have marbled page edges and marbled endpapers . Vol. II is published by Taylor & Maury , Washington , in 1853 and is the First Edition of the work . Vol.I has a frontispiece portrait of Jefferson by Gilbert Stuart . The tissue guard is intact . Vol. I has a large fold-out draft of the Declaration of Independence in Jefferson's handwriting . Each volume has an Index to that volume and Volume IX has an Index to the complete set . Jefferson bequeathed all of his manuscript papers to his grandson , Thomas Jefferson Randolph . Randolph published a small percentage of these papers serving as his own editor . In 1848 Congress appropriated the funds to buy all of the manuscripts and to pay for their publication . H. A. Washington's work in this set is the result of that appropriation and is the first " full " compilation and publication of the papers of one of America's most gifted and articulate leaders . This is an exceptional set . The bindings on the rebound set are exquisite in full Nigerian goatskin . Gold gilt graphics on each volume . The text blocks are consistently in excellent condition . There are no marks of any kind in these volumes . Remarkably , there is virtually no foxing in any of the books .
