About This Item

Saratoga Springs, New York: YGA Yaddo Garden Association. Spiral. Good. Featuring recipes by Yaddo Artists, Yaddo Corporation Members, Yaddo Garden Association Members and Friends." White plastic comb spiralbound, with subject tabs, 111 pages. Some edge wear, sticker scar and one creased corner on front cover. One of the beauties of this rare gem most likely published in the 1990s is that many of the credited recipes are introduced with autobiographical snippets ranging from the expected ["A recipe from my grandmother who still strongly believes in butter and heavy cream" p.74] to the sublime ["This recipe came into the Rice family about 1950 when we had the good fortune to meet Edith Bartucciato ( Edith Brown) who at the time was married to "Johnnie Boy", the owner of Johnnie's Pizzaria in Tarrytown, NY. She was our cook and introduced us to Italian food and the best meatballs and garlic bread I have ever run into. Here's a 1966 adaptation which I found in my wife Genie's family recipe cookbook (Edith's wedding present being some cooking lessons)" p.52]. The Yaddo Garden Association, founded in 1991, is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the gardens at Yaddo. The gardens consist of both a rose garden and a rock garden. Volunteers of the Yaddo Garden Association do all phases of garden work. The Yaddo Gardens are open to the public seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to dusk. The gardens feature a variety of plants which peak throughout the season. The roses begin to bloom mid-June and are at peak from about the third week of June through July and then peak again mid to late August. The rock garden is in bloom mid-June through mid-September. The remainder of the estate is private and may be visited only on special occasions. Yaddo, founded in 1900 by the financier Spencer Trask and his wife Katrina, herself a poet, is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Unless otherwise noted all the citations in our Community Cookbook Catalog have octavo stiff card stock wrappers and plastic comb bindings typical of the specialty fundraising cookbook publishers (Morris, Fundcraft, etc). What may enhance some over others is the inclusion of text and photos as well as truly regional recipes and we take note of such features. This book has no mention of these specialized publishers and appears to be entirely self-published.
