BOUND IN BLUE & WHITE CALICO COTTON CLOTH COVERED BOARDS . * This early Hearn work was dedicated to his very good friend, Joseph S. Tunison. This is the story of a "DA" or a creole negress of the darker hue, commonly a "capresse" than a "mestive." These "DA" enjoyed a very high social status in the old colonial days on Martinique island. . A fascinating work. Hearn admits to several relationships with creole women during his New Orleans days and travel in the West Indies. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: Generic: The First Edition was bound in the publisher's white cloth with blue decorations commonly called "Calico." With paper labels in blue ink titles on the front cover and spine. Other color bindings per Perkins are not the First edition First Issue. . All copies have all edges trimmed. . Copy the FIRST BRITISH EDITION is bound in the publisher's original highly decorative cover with red cloth, black decorations, gold rule lines, spine with similar pattern a bit dull & darkened, with gold stamped titles. . The first 3 pages have a feint damp stain at lower right edg about 7 x 1 mm., and a little bit on lower edge of same pages as well. Very feint, no impact to text, with black & white frontispiece.
