A little corner bumping, small chip and fraying at head of spine, Front hinge starting, some age-darkening, all pages clean, unmarked and intact. Some light pencil writing on front pastedown. Gilding on spine worn.

Printed on heavy stock with 25 illustrations. Tissue-protected frontispiece. Full blindstamped pictorial cover showing armored and visored St. George slaying the dragon, with sun, castle, distressed damsel and SCUS GEORGIUS in lower panel, bordered by stag and hound, lions, gryphons, castle walls, suns, florals.

Elizabeth Oke Buckland Gordon (born c. 1825) was a writer and the biographer of her father, distinguished geologist, paleontologist, theologian and Dean of Westminster William Buckland.

This a careful and considered account of the saint as an historical figure as well as a history of the knights of St. George, the Order of the Garter, and St. George's powerful military and symbolic influence on Christianity. The widespread commemoration of him in liturgy, customs, traditions, art and civic life is dealt with in the latter half of the work.
