About This Item

Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Good+/Good+. Victor Steinbrueck. Square 4to. Pp. 111. Frontis. Elliott Bay sketch. Illustrated throughout with black ink drawings. Red cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, endpaper maps on blue. Signed by Steinbrueck in ink on the half title. Top edge a tad dust-soiled, boards slightly bowed. In the two color wrap-around illustrated dust jacket with price $10 intact on the front flap: edges age -oned with short closed tears, light scuffs and stains. Withal, a presentable copy. Sketches of homes and buildings, neighborhoods, industrial facilities and infrastructure with historical, social and aesthetic commentary. The author of the first Seattle Cityscape (1962) and Market Sketchbook (1968), Steinbrueck (1911-1985) was known as a proponent of modern regionalism, and his architectural practice was mostly devoted to residential projects. His greatest legacy might be his preservation efforts: after a stint as chair of the University of Washington Department of Architecture, his activism in preserving Seattle's oldest neighborhood, Pioneer Square, and the bustling Pike Place Market, allowed the city to retain its soul.

Dust jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
