About This Item

Book is as new except for a lightly bumped corner. Dust jacket shows some wear at bottom front, light foxing on spine of dust jacket.

Abbot Gabriel's thorough and meticulous work on the extraordinary corpus of Ambrosiana microfilm at The Mediaeval Institute of the University of Notre Dame. The works follow scientific progress from the 10th to the eighteenth centuries, including works in all branches of science from giants of scientific progress like Euclid, Galen, Pliny, Avicenna, Neckham, Bacon, Da Vinci, Newton, Galileo and many more.

In some cases, these microfilms are now the only source of these documents, owing to war damage, etc. Abbot Gabriel researched and verified all references and items in the Abrosiana.

Fr. Astrik L Gabriel, O. Praem (1907 - 2005) was, among many other accomplisments,, the world's leading authority on the history of the medieval university; he was Director and Professor Emeritus of the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame and founder of the Astrik L Gabriel Collection on Medieval Universities.

His card is bound in front of volume with "To Professor Kenneth Setton with Admiration, 27 June 1968" in his handwriting. Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995), eminent medievalist and Permanent Member of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (whose book this was), was his colleague when Abbot Gabriel was a Visiting Professor there in 1980.
