About This Item
NY: Doubleday & Co, 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Second printing. Inscribed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau on the half-title page in his usual upper left location: "To the Guarinos, JY Cousteau." Scarce signed. A book that explores sharks via encounters while on the Calypso, Cousteau's famous research vessel. The book is co-authored with his son Philippe who carried the family mantle and distinguished himself as well in ocean conservation; the majority of the narrative actually seems to be by Philippe, but shorter sections by Jacques-Yves are interspersed. Rich with color photos and stills from films that the Cousteau team made. Jacques-Yves Cousteau remains the most famous oceanographer and marine science popularizer in history. He was also the co-inventor of first SCUBA diving system.
A small quarto, blue cloth boards with silver lettering on spine. Near fine with a band of faint soiling to lower edge of boards, light yellowing on the free endpapers from the dust jacket's flaps, and some toning to the appendix pages which are different (non-glossy) paper than the rest of the book. One small dark spot to outer text block face. In a very near fine jacket with just a few creases to spine crown.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
