St. Louis: The Mangan Printing Company, 1913. Hardcover. 16mo. Rebound in grey cloth with leather spine label. 79pp. Frontispiece. Near fine. Several light blue crayon marks in margins. Scarce first edition of this verse collection by the bizarre Japanese-German poet (1869-1944), boldly inscribed by him on the front flyleaf: "To / Prof. Jno War Stimson / Presented by the Author / Oct. 1914." Accompanied by an Autograph Letter Signed from Hartmann, 1p, 8½" X 11", Beaumont, CA, 1928 March 14. Addressed to Mr. Freystadt. Very good. In part: "I wonder where you dug up my drama 'Christ'. I myself have no copy and would like to own one. Would you sell your copy -- for what you paid for it (or more)? -- No doubt, you want to keep it. I do not exactly understand what you mean by my 'entire theory of life' -- no biography as yet was published -- and I fear that I shall never finish my auto-biography, started years ago. It will remain a torso -- as typewriting is hard on my eyes -- besides it is a fearful waste of time.... there are two other works of mine you should study -- my 'Japanese Rhythms' and 'My Rubaiyat'. Having much leisure on hand, I made a small mimeographed edition of them -- both went through 3 or 4 editions previously and are entirely out of print...." Excellent biographical and bibliographical content.

Description:
[New York]: The American Mercury, 1926. Paperback. 8vo. Green wrappers. (6pp). Fair plus. Actually a decent example of this remarkably fragile production, printed on thin limp stock -- which explains its exceptional scarcity, for its poor production quality assured a low survival rate. While fairly attractive and even with caution handleable, the original single horizontal fold is present, there are a couple of corner chips and the original stapled fold is slightly separated and delicate. Mencken explains the infamous "Hatrack" case, in which a Massachusetts society tried to prevent the sale of the April 1926 issue of "The American Mercury" because of articles in it they deemed obscene -- sparking a controversial case in which Mencken sued the Post Office. Mencken won and made his point, and the "Hatrack Censorship Case" is now considered a landmark free-speech case. Despite delicate condition, a quite presentable and displayable first edition of this rarity.

Very good. Faint edgewear and scuffed marbled paper, though internally white, bright and near fine. A tight, quite handsome early printing of this English classic in a classy custom binding of the period; Ticknor and Fields first published "School Days at Rugby" in 1857 and "Tom Brown at Oxford" in 1861. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH, chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War, appointed quartermaster general in 1865. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
