Ostia, 16 miles from Rome at the mouth of the Tiber, was, during its heyday, the receiving port of the greatest consuming centre in the world. Rebuilt in Hadrian's era the commercial area reflected its importance as a trading centre, yet by 200CE the city was in decline.
