New York: Wm. A. Pond, 1869. Wonderful large lithographed sheet music cover with portrait of Cyrus W. Field, with diagram of his invention, the trans Atlantic telegraph cable above, and sailing ships below the portrait. The March, by Francis H. Brown, celebrates the laying of the cable. Cyrus West Field (1819-1892) and the Atlantic Telegraph Company laid the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The project began in 1854 and was completed in 1858. Disbound, in very good condition. 10 x 13"

Description:
New York: Firth, Pond, 1858. First edition. 4to. 5 pp. Music only. At head of the front wrapper: "Cordially Dedicated to Cyrus W. Field Esq. of New York / by the Publishers." Field (1819-1892), American businessman who started the Atlantic Telegraph Company, led a group of investors that financed and laid the first transatlantic cable that was completed the year this march was published. Original illustrated wrappers (Lith. by Sarony, Major & Knapp, N.Y.), featuring an oval portrait of Field flanked by an array of national flags, a cross-section of the telegraph cable, with key, above the portrait and ships on the sea below, all enclosed within a thin-rule border. Disbound from a volume of sheet music, soiled, and top edge trimmed (taking the top half of the first line of the dedication).
