Rev. Lund points out in his preface that, before they fell, most of the world's great empires had concentrated most of their wealth into the hands of very few. Peck, the author, ran a successful department store in Lewiston ("the largest...in New England, outside of Boston") and in an afternote, solicits funds to found the key institution of the book, promising a signed 'edition de luxe' of the book to contributors. Herein he decries the centralization of economic power in the US and describes and advocates a system of cooperative ownership and production in a Utopian narrative.The protagonist awakes from a twenty-five year sleep in 1925 in a new city where the co-operative movement reigns supreme.

The author introduces his "Coöperative Association of America," a cure for the economic ills of the time; he writes that this book is not a literary effort but rather a word from one businessman to another.
