Boston: Prince Society, 1869; 1869; 1874. "Being a collection of pamphlets and official papers issued during the period between the overthrow of the Andros government and the establishment of the second charter of Massachusetts; with notes and a memoir of Sir Edmund Andros." Andros was appointed Governor of the Dominion of New England in 1686. His arbitrary insistence on inserting the Church of England into a Puritan society resulted in an uprising against him in 1689. Tradition has him fleeing captivity disguised as a woman. DAB gives a more balanced account: "His personality has been little understood because attention has always been focused on the policies of his administration which were distasteful to the theocrats... He was essentially a soldier, and where soldierly qualities were needed his rule was excellent." See Howes A 271. This is a mixed set, volume III being in a different binding than the first two.
