Description:
Cassell & Co. Ltd., London, 1886. Book. Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. Second impression of the first edition, issued a year after the original impression and probably printed from the standing type. Crown 8vo. vi, 442pp + [xvi] publisher's advertisements dated SG.4.86. Original red fine weave cloth lettered in gilt at the spine, with a black-stamped border and lettering to the upper board, and a blind-stamped border to the rear board. The cloth a little faded at the backstrip, with a touch of wear to several extremities, and small bumps to the corner tips. Former owner inked and pencilled notes to the half-title and adjacent verso, noting the pages at which various animals and species appear. A nice crisp copy of this early reissue of Jefferies' quasi-dystopian / utopian novel, set in England following an unspecified calamity that destroys the great cities and allows nature to re-take cultivated land. 1,000 copies were printed. Miller & Matthews B22.3 (binding A, printing variant B)..
