Norris, who would find fame as an author and journalist, studied at the University of California from 1890 to 1894 with mixed results. In the accompanying petition, according to this document the earliest surviving communication in Norris's collected correspondence, he requests the ability to choose his own college coursework in order to focus on becoming a fiction writer. Frank Norris (1870 - 1902) was an American journalist and author who is best known for his novel "McTeague", written in 1899. He was a member of the Bohemiam Club of San Francisco during the Gold Rush days. As a journalist, he worked for the San Francisco Chronicle and McClure's and traveled quite a bit through South Africa and Cuba. He died quite young after an appendicitis attack
