Description:
Bando Kriegsgefangenenlager, Japan: Lagerdruckerei, 1917. Softcover. Near Fine. A collection of eight rare printed items little known outside of Germany or Japan. The Bando POW Camp, located near Naruto, Japan, was set up in 1917 to house about one thousand German prisoners, both soldiers and civilians, who had been captured at Tsingtao, China. The collection includes the very rare camp directory: *Kriegsgefangenenlager Bando Adressbuch* (November 1917), with two fine color maps and advertisements; a beautifully illustrated children's book: *Drei Märchen* meant to be sent home to family and friends in Germany; and the final six consecutive issues of *Die Baracke* (April - September, 1919), an illustrated monthly "Zeitung für das Kriegsgefangenenlager" [Newspaper for Prisoners of War]. All eight items are remarkably well-preserved, in very good to near fine condition. Unlike other Japanese POW camps, the German prisoners at Bando were given an unusual level of freedom, and were allowed to… Read More

The crowd at said dinner is diverse, many nationalities and races, and Housman asks, Why cannot there some great evangelist come/ And knock sense in the heads of… Read More

Description:
U.S. Navy. Good. 1920. On offer is an excellent small songbook kept by an American sailor. This notebook measures 6 inches by 3 3/4 inches and contains 140 pages. It is 60% complete. The cover and pages are in good condition and the handwriting is very legible. For centuries, sailors have used songs to help with their heavy work, to entertain themselves and to build the sense of crew spirit so needed to man ships for long periods of time in all kinds of weather. Lewis Szarek was no different. A Machinists Mate in the United States Navy, he apparently served from the late 1920's into WWII. He has written his name and service (US Navy) on the inside cover. Casual research suggests that he comes from Providence, RI. However, no other biographical data was found. The notebooks contain the lyrics to 39 songs. One song, Coghlan's Black Gang Crew, possibly points to the ship he served on in WWII - the destroyer USS Coughlan (DD 606). The term 'black gang' is a naval term with its… Read More

Description:
Cincinnati: [n.p.], 1920. Very good plus.. Rare inscribed first edition of the second poetry collection by the Black artist and author called by contemporaries the "Paul Laurence Dunbar of Cincinnati," presented to another Cincinnati poet. Dandridge, a painter and decorator in his early years, changed his profession to telephone coal sales and his creative talents to poetry after polio left him hemiplegic at the age of 29; by the mid-1920s he was literary editor of THE CINCINNATI JOURNAL. The poems in his three published collections are written alternately in dialect reminiscent of fellow Ohioan Paul Laurence Dunbar, to whom he was frequently compared, and in the literary register of poetic convention. During and after his lifetime, Dandridge's lesser efforts were frequently anthologized. The poet is still more frequently damned with excruciating faint praise as an inspirational figure, his poetry reduced to "a striking example of what can be done in spite of handicaps" (Wormley, 1937). There was… Read More

Description:
ALLENTOWN PENNSYLVANIA USS TENNESSEE. Good. 1913. On offer is an excellent, very detailed original 5-year diary handwritten by a Lehigh University female student who appears to be from an affluent family. Margaret Shimer is an 18 year old girl living in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Daughter of a well-to-do family, she enjoys a very comfortable life during the years of WWI. In high school when the diary begins, her entries are full of remarks about social activities and friends. With her mother, she enjoys shopping for dresses, hats and such, meeting friends and going dancing. From context, we learn that she attends a local post-secondary institution [while unnamed she refers to Professor Hughes and we note a Professor Hughes at Lehigh University at that time and geographically it makes a near conclusive case] 'Asked Prof. Hughes if he would sign my degree and he said he would ...' [Feb 18, 1915] There are entries referring to her studies: Poetry test without studying for it [June 6,… Read More

ABOARD THE S.S. SAMARIA. Good. 1923. On offer is a sensational, original manuscript diary written in a souvenir Around the World Log Book for the Golden Jubilee in 1923 beginning January 24th departing New York aboard the S.S. Samaria to return four months later. The 112 page book, which has a scrapbook quality; tucked in are postcards, newspaper articles, cards, the passenger list etc., was handwritten by a super diarist, Mariana Townsend a 60 year old woman who has an excellent eye for detail and a great sense of humor that translate to the page wonderfully well. Besides the great narrative this was a historical trip in a number of ways: we learn as she writes in her wonderfully descriptive way that the Samaria was hailed: "the largest ship ever to pass through the 98 miles of ditch" having been permitted to go through the Suez Canal at the cost of $30,000. Of particular interests to Egyptologists and historians of post World War I Egypt will find extensive entries of her time… Read More
