Description:
New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1963. First Edition. An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 - this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. The earliest we have traced… Read More

Description:
New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel's books, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England, while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if he took the man's hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so "stuffy" that he would just grow a new one. The book received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times reviewer called the book "a lovely bit of tomfoolery which keeps up the suspense and surprise until the end." Booklist, which had criticized Geisel's previous book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, for containing only enough material for one comic strip, praised The 500 Hats as "a brand-new idea, developed into a complete tale, not too long,… Read More

Description:
London: William Heinemann, 1909. In these essays on travels in Italy written from 1872 to 1909, Henry James explores art and religion, political shifts and cultural revolutions, and the nature of travel itself. James's enthusiastic appreciation of the unparalleled aesthetic allure of Venice, the vitality of Rome, and the noisy, sensuous appeal of Naples is everywhere marked by pervasive regret for the disappearance of the past and by ambivalence concerning the transformation of nineteenth-century Europe.

Description:
New York: Harper & Row, 1988. Fine.. Beautiful association copy of the limited 25th Anniversary edition, presented by Sendak to his dear friend James Marshall, with the special card containing an original signed pen-and-ink drawing of Max parading as a Wild Thing and an additional inscription to Marshall. Sendak sent this copy as a birthday gift to Marshall, best known for his George and Martha series, one year before Marshall's untimely death from AIDS-related complications at the age of 50. In 1997, Sendak wrote passionately about Marshall's place in picture book history for the NEW YORK TIMES, including their own deep connection: "If I remember with terrible pain my lost friend and colleague, it is only because James raised the art of friendship to an exhilarating height. I think myself the luckiest of men to have shared his sweet warmth and confidence. There is a small army of people who, I'm certain, feel the same way. He made me laugh until I cried. No one else could ever do that. He was a… Read More

Description:
1995. The wild things never meet but there's a skirmish of wit between them Published as cover artwork for the 1996 issue on compact disc of Shakespeare's comedy by Caedmon Audio. Sendak's illustration, showing Beatrice and Benedick, was one of two illustrations from the Caedmon series reproduced in Schiller & David's lavish Maurice Sendak, a celebration of the Artist and his Work. Caedmon Records was founded in the US in 1952 and became a pioneer in audiobooks. In the early 1960s, there were two rival series of Shakespeare on record. The UK Argo company released a scholarly series, which was described by one commentator as "a heritage project" (Folkerth). In contrast, as noted by Folkerth, "the Caedmon series was a commercial venture that counted on the star power of actors such as Richard Burton, Ralph Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Rex Harrison, Anthony Quayle, and Paul Scofield... Whereas the Argo recordings have a documentary feel to them, as if the microphones are merely capturing… Read More

Very good in a very good slipcase. Uncommon. Hailed as "the Picasso of children's books," Maurice Sendak produced more than 85 books, of which Where the Wild Things Are is undeniably the most famous, being one of the ten best-selling children's books of all time. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Basis for the 2009 film directed by Spike Jonze starring Max Records and… Read More
