An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 - this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. A bit of foxing to the boards, near fine in a modestly toned, very good dustwrapper with a couple of faint splash marks. Nicely Inscribed by Sendak in 1966 with a small drawing of a dog.

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel's books, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England, while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if he took the man's hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so "stuffy" that he would just grow a new one. The book received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times reviewer called the book "a lovely bit of tomfoolery which keeps up the suspense and surprise until the end." Beautiful association copy of the limited 25th Anniversary edition, presented by Sendak to his dear friend James Marshall, with the special card containing an original signed pen-and-ink drawing of Max parading as a Wild Thing and an additional inscription to Marshall. Sendak sent this copy as a birthday gift to Marshall, best known for his George and Martha series, one year before Marshall's untimely death from AIDS-related complications at the age of 50. PRESENTATION COPY, the first volume inscribed by the artist on the half-title: "For dear Judy - with all my love! Maurice Sendak Dec. '73" which was actually the earliest month the book was available. ALSO INCLUDED is a folded paper chemise inscribed by the artist "For Judy from her loving friend Maurice / Oct. 2002." Inside is a complete set of all 27 page illustrations as individual prints, handsome impressions on large paper, each sheet measuring 8-3/4 x 6-5/8 inches compared to the published sheet size in the book of 6-7/8 x 5-1/2 inches.The recipient of these two inscriptions is Sendak's close friend Judy Taylor, his British editor (The Bodley Head) from 1960 onwards who is largely credited with having helped to promote and popularize Sendak's illustration art in Europe.

1993. Arthur Yorinks has published 11 children's books, directed numerous plays and operas, and in 1990, established the Night Kitchen, a children's theater company in partnership with author-illustrator Maurice Sendak. The company produced several plays directed by Yorinks and designed by Sendak including It's Alive, a Halloween comedy, and So, Sue Me, a performance featuring construction workers in pantomime.
