1939 First Editions, First Printings of ALL 6 books in the "Madeline" series with an ORIGINAL drawing SIGNED by the Ludwig Bemelmans framed separately. This drawing is of "Pepito" one of the characters in his book was first introduced in "Madeline and the Bad Hat" Each book is the TRUE FIRST EDITION with the ORIGINAL dustjacket. The last book, "Madeline's Christmas" was first published in wrappers so this copy is not a hardcover but the first edition in wrappers. ALL the books are in great shape. The bindings are tight and the dustjackets are beautiful with slight wear to the edges. The pages are clean in each book with NO writing, marks or bookplates. First published in 1939, each Madeline story begins: "In an old house in Paris, that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... the smallest one was Madeline." "The original inspiration for Madeline was the convent where Bemelmans' mother was educated as a child, along with the author's own experience in boarding school, where he walked with his classmates in two straight lines" (Silvey, 55).
