Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1892. This is a true first trade edition, first state, of Whittier's last collection of 18 poems published during his lifetime. The book was originally published in a privately printed edition of only 277 copies, mainly for the author's friends, in 1890. The public demand was such that Whittier expanded the slender volume, adding additional poems, for this, the first trade edition of 1892. The "point" that distinguishes this volume as a "first state" copy is an error on the "List of Illustrations" page that lists the last of the nine illustrations, "Lapse tenderly away," as being on Page 64. Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1937. This rare edition provides a history of the famous Rossetti poem and its various revisions in a 56-page Introduction by Paull Franklin Baum. This is followed by the text of four versions of The Blessed Damozel. The first is the 1847 version from the original manuscript (, then titled The Blessed Damsel). This is followed by the 1850 version as published in The Germ. Next is the 1856 version from The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine. This prose rendering into modern English, with modern English spelling, stays true to Chaucer but makes him accessible to a larger readership. It comes from a private college library and library markings are on the rear endpaper, with a tucked-in library card having only one date, January, 1935. The book includes an Index of Authors and an Index according to subject matter. The rebinder has mixed up the order of some of the Index pages, six of which are edge-taped and one of which is missing a corner.
