Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1892. This is a true first trade edition, first state, of Whittier's last collection of 18 poems published during his lifetime. The book was originally published in a privately printed edition of only 277 copies, mainly for the author's friends, in 1890. The public demand was such that Whittier expanded the slender volume, adding additional poems, for this, the first trade edition of 1892. The "point" that distinguishes this volume as a "first state" copy is an error on the "List of Illustrations" page that lists the last of the nine illustrations, "Lapse tenderly away," as being on Page 64. Later printings corrected this error to the correct page, 68. (If you bother to email the sellers of most alleged first trade editions at this site regarding this error, you will find that they are actually later printings.) The book is in very good condition. It has white cloth covers, with die-stamped gilt lettering, borders, and an… Read More

Description:
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1937. This rare edition provides a history of the famous Rossetti poem and its various revisions in a 56-page Introduction by Paull Franklin Baum. This is followed by the text of four versions of The Blessed Damozel. The first is the 1847 version from the original manuscript (, then titled The Blessed Damsel). This is followed by the 1850 version as published in The Germ. Next is the 1856 version from The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine. Finally, there's the 1881 revision, which includes variant readings as footnotes. The book is in Very Good condition (see photo), with its original dust jacket. The book is tightly bound, and the text is clean, with no signatures from former owners. The book measures 7 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches and includes 30 pages in addition to the 56-page Introduction. In addition, there is a fold-out of the complete 1847 manuscript in Rossetti's own neat hand. The unclipped dust jacket is browning and chipped. I've… Read More

Vernon Watkins edited the book, as well as provided an Introduction. This particular volume has its own literary history as well. It was a gift from the older Vernon Watkins to Jane L. McCormick, a close friend, a graduate student at University of Swansea, Wales, and an ardent admirer of both Vernon's and Dylan's work. It comes from Jane's estate. Jane died after a courageous 10-year battle with breast cancer. (Although this copy is unsigned by… Read More
