A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES [With Signature of R. M. Ballantyne to the Title Page]

By Stevenson, Robert Louis

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1885. A fascinating and important first edition copy with outstanding provenance. The signature of R. M. Ballantyne is tipped onto the title page and an inscription to the front free end paper states 'from Jean Ballantyne 1902.' [Robert Michael Ballantyne, Scottish author of juvenile fiction, wrote more than 100 books the most famous of which 'The Coral Island'. was a strong influence on Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 94), who would later base portions of his famous book Treasure Island on themes in 'The Coral Island'. Jean Ballantyne is believed to be one of the daughters of R. M. Ballantyne, probably named after Balantyne's mother Jean. It is a moot point as to whether this was actually Balantyne's copy, though it would seem so; there is also a seemingly unrelated gift inscription on the front free end paper]. Pp. x, 101 [3 -blanks]; original end papers. Original blue cloth with bevelled edges, gilt lettering to the spine with gilt vignette to the front board, binding very good with a little general wear, slightly marked, head/tail of the spine and corners rubbed. Contents clean and tight, a few gatherings slightly out of line, end papers tanned, a few pages slightly dusty at edges, otherwise appears unmarked. A very good first edition copy, signed on a slip to the title page by R. M. Ballantyne. [Bibliographic note: this first edition copy mentions '(two series)' after 'New Arabian Nights' on the advert for books 'By the Same Author' and it would seem that might suggest it is a second issue of the first edition.]. By Author's Wife. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo.

GINGER & PICKLES

By Potter, Beatrix

London: Frederick Warne, 1909. A fine first edition copy in an original printed glassine dust jacket. Pp. 51, [1]; color frontispiece and nine full-page color illustrations; b/w vignette to the title-page and nineteen further black and white vignettes in the text. Original tan boards blocked in green with a colour onlay to the front board. Colour pictorial endpapers (Jane Quinby: Beatrix Potter A Bibliographical Check-List -plates VIII and IX). The original glassine jacket is slightly later (ca. 1912), printed in black, with an advertisement for "The Peter Rabbit Books" on the rear panel "The Most Successful Children's BooksRecently Published" appended to which is "The Tale of Mr. Tod" and "The Tale of Pigling Bland" (which were published in 1912 & 1913 respectively); the rear flap lists "Picture Books for Children" Illustrated by L Leslie Brooke"; the front flap advertises "Charming New Editions of Miss Potters's Little Folding Pocket Book Series" (see illustrations). The jacket is good only, a fairly large piece is missing from the front panel, but this appears to have been blank, and extends on to the lower edge of the front flap, with very slight loss of text; the rear panel and flap are complete, a little chipping and some tears to the spine, neverthess it is remarkable that such a fragile production has survived at all. The book is in near fine to fine condition, minimal wear to the boards and spine, having been protected by the jacket; contents clean and tight; slight foxing to the half-title page and reverse of the frontispiece plate, and the odd isolated light spot to a further one or two pages, otherwise unmarked and without inscriptions.
