The author was Master Shipwright at Brest, and in 1737 was ordered by the French Minister of the Navy to go to England and Holland to study the construction of their ships of war. His highly detailed report, never before published, and here translated and edited by David Roberts provides a highly important comparative study of the French, English and Dutch navies of the early 18th century. The destroyer Campbeltown is not only famous for her part in the commando raid on the St. Naziare drydock in 1942, but it also representative on an important type. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131), she was one of the over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service towards the end of World War I. When Britain appealed to American in 1940 for the transfer of fifty vessels for anti-submarine duty, Buchanan was one of the first of the 'gift horses' to be transferred. Renamed Campbeltown, she spent 18 arduous months on convoy duty, before being selected for her role as a blockship to deny Tirpitz the use of the repair facilities at St. Nazaire.

This is the is the culmination of thirty-seven years' work by H.Trevor Lenton, an experienced naval officer and well recognized historian, covering 20,000 ships and containing 634 photographs. It weighs over 2 Kg and will incur additional shipping costs. It's near fine quality is marred only by the owner's signature (he was a senior Canadian officer and naval pilot) mostly hidden behind the dust jacket flap. This volume lists all significant warships built between 1860-1905, and is the first complete listing of all major warships built in the period between the first Ironclad and the Dreadnought. This book is a detailed comparison between British and American destroyer armament. From the guns, torpedoes and ASW weapons including the mountings, directors, fire control and electronics. Excellent detail with photographs and line drawings, this book will be of great interest to the naval enthusiast.

Ian Allan, London, 1972, 1st ed. 160 p.with 48 pages of photographs includes index. Very good/very good mylar. WWII escort carrier ships. During the Second World War the British needed a platform for planes to use for protection of the convoy fleets moving goods. They converted captured German merchant ships and added decks for take off. Then the pilots were able to attack U-boats and enemy bombers.

Superbly written with part one technical and part two the historic aspects with new information about period between the wars when the French navy used innovative design changes for the cruisers of the fleet. The testing and trials are also documented.

The alliance of the Royal Navy and the French fleet when by the mid 1930s, both fleets had overextended themselves with global defense commitments, owing mainly to the collapse of the world war alliances and to an ominous shift in the balance of world naval power. To maximize their power, England and France combined their assets in a naval alliance. The union was not an altogether happy one, but it survived in one form or another until the British attack upon the French fleet at Mers el-Kébir in 1940.

James Pritchard analyses the changes that occurred in naval organizations and administration in the years between the end of the War of Austrian Succession and the conclusion of the Seven Years' War. During this time the French navy was reorganized, rebuilt, and fought a major war in which it was annihilated and its officer corps militarily humiliated. Yet this period also established the conditions that made it possible for the navy to become the major arm of French foreign policy for the only time in French history.

This edition discusses warships operating above and below the surface have needed increased endurance and long range capability. These aspects have affected the new designs and power the ships. The ships of a more traditional design, destroyers, cruisers and frigates now are used in many roles for anti-submarine and electronic warfare with helicopter pads providing for support and surveillance.
