Rare copy of Montalba and Doyle's Fairy book, no date but presumably the first edition of 1868. NB this isn't the later 1890 edition with the Doyle memoir. Pages are tanned around the edges though generally clean otherwise. Some pages especially at the beginning have some additional spotting and marking. Inside boards and initial pages (front and rear) have remains of presumably tape used to hold a protective cover in place. Front and rear hinge generally attached but feel a touch loose (especially at first few pages). Binding overall is OK but some care needed to keep it this way. A little give. Purple covers are mostly bright with some marking. Spine more faded and with some nibbling top and bottom. Some corner impacts. Part of an old prize giving stamp is on inner front board. This copy was owned by folklorist Ruth Manning-Sanders, and she has signed and dated it on FEP. Overall condition is Good for its age, though objectively Fair. A very nice first edition (1954) of this collection of Ten Tang Dynasty stories, published in English in Peking. Pages are clear and bright with no inscriptions or markings, a few have minor corner curl at base. Pull out map present and clean. Binding is tight. A nice copy of Gillham's work on Alaskan folk tales. This is the First UK edition, illustrated by Chanimun, part of the Medicine Men of Hooper Bay series. Original cloth, clipped DJ which is generally very nice, a little browning to edges and an old mark at bottom right front cover. Pages have a little staining to bottom edge of textblock. But internally pages are excellent: no inscriptions, clean and bright, no markings or browning. Spine is completely tightly bound. A first (thus) edition of Keightley's collection of fairy stories. He published this 'reissue' as he called it some five years after the original, with amendments. Sometimes known as the second issue. Overwhelmingly, pages are very good indeed: bright and clean. Some have spotting, and a few especially at the start have a little light staining. But most are really very nice. Front and rear endpapers have heavy brown tape residue of presumably an earlier protective cover applied. Two small inscriptions are on FEP and opening page. Opening pages condition not as good as rest of book. Front hinge and (less so) rear hinge has a little detachment, though overall binding is generally tight. Spine has a piece missing at top, and is generally eroded here and there. Front and back cover generally fine. An excellent copy of the first edition of Jones and Kropf's collection of Magyar folklore, along with analysis of the Magyars and their beliefs. A very good copy: pages are clean and unmarked with just some age wear here and there. No inscriptions. Not ex library. Covers are very good: just a few marks and age wear, and a little scuffing here and there. Spine has the slightest give but not cracking or hinge issues. Very nice. No DJ, as published. A nice copy of the first edition of Bombas's collection of folk tales related to the Santal Parganas tribe in India. A fair amount of foxing spots on some pages, with many pages having none at all. A few pages at start and end have rust coloured imprint of a paper clip (see photos ). This book is from the collection of folklorist and fairy tale author Ruth Manning-Sanders, and she has signed her name on FEP. Boards are tightened clean. Garnett's translations of Greek folk verses and songs, along with Stuart-Glennie's additional essays. This is the 2 Volume first edition from 1896. A very nice copy. Both volumes have clear and unmarked rough cut pages, just the odd patch of spotting here and there. Boards are clean with just normal minor shelf wear and corner impacts. Spines both very tight. A really nice copy of the Harrap 1921 edition. Pages are clean and bright with only the most scattered foxing. Uncut pages. All pages and colour plates present, tight and bright. Boards are clean and spine is tight. Cover is very good, very little age wear. Spine is bright and clean, just a little shelf wear top and bottom. This copy was in the collection of English folklorist and poet Ruth Manning-Sanders, who has neatly signed on the FEP. Altogether very nice. Professor Vernaleken's collection of folk stories from Austria and Bohemia. This is the Swan Sonnenschein first edition of 1889, in original binding unlike many sale copies. Book is very good. Pages are largely clean and bright, a few pages with some browning patches on. Some scattered spotting. Many pages have no marks at all. Text block is the original gilt. A previous owner has inscribed on FEP. Original boards are tight, cover picture is clear and clean. Some rubbing to spine. A nice first edition of Denton and Mijatovies' book on Serbian folk tales. Pages are very good: aside from age wear on the outside block, inside the pages are clean and mostly bright with very few spots. No marks or inscriptions. Boards are good: cover is clear and bright and has a 'Property of St Mary's College Strawberry Hill' stamp in centre, as does rear board. Spine has a little peeling at top. Minor corner impact. Spine is tight just the slightest give. Front hinge exposed but no obvious impact structurally. All in all a very nice copy. A nice copy of this undated edition of Henderson's book on folk tales from Wales, Spain, Japan and elsewhere. Assumed perhaps 1920s-30s. Pages are clean and unmarked, a little scattered spotting. A good first edition copy of Thorpe's collection of popular Yule tales and traditions. Pages are generally clean and bright. This was owned by folklorist and author Ruth Manning-Sanders and she has inscribed her name on title page. There are a few light pencil notes in the text which are assumed to be hers and so have been left (eminently removable if desired). Front and back hinges have some semi-detachment, although spine binding remains tight. A few of the advertising pages at the end have come loose. Front and rear inside boards have residue of brown tape presumably used to fix a now removed protective cover. Rest of book seems fine though a little care may be needed. Covers are very good.
