A nice copy of Mary Oldfield Howey's examination of the status of the cat in religion and magic over time. Undated but assumed 1929-1930. Pages are overwhelmingly clean and bright, just with spotting on FEP and some slight residue of a damp stain(?) which has left the colour frontis marginally stained at top and a little unstuck at base. However colour picture is still bright and clean (see photo). Residue stain on top of text block (see photo). All other pages very bright and clear, and no inscriptions from previous owners present. Original purple book mark strip is present and intact. Binding is firm. Boards are a little scuffed and are marked (see photos)with some blotches, and the spine a bit darkened. Famous writer and investigator of the unusual, Peter Underwood, has compiled an excellent dictionary of all matters supernatural. A huge range of topics are well covered, including demonology, ESP, the occult, Crowley, runes, lycanthropy and many many more. A lovely copy. Pages are bright, clean, unmarked and with no foxing. A very nice copy of the first edition of this classic overview of Britain's many myths and legends. A seminal and much referenced work with an impressive range covering all the major topics in its field. An essential item for the collector of all things esoteric, strange, occult and mythical. Pages are exceptionally clean and bright with no marking, inscriptions, tanning or foxing. Rare thus. NOT an ex library book. A rare copy of Thierens' classic work on the history and meaning of the tarot. This is the first edition from 1930 (date as assumed, no actual date in text which is the case for this edition). Pages very good for their age, just normal age wear and some foxing spots on text edge. No inscriptions or markings seen. Possibly a FEP cut out, though nothing seems missing so potentially just a stub/remnant of paper. Original errata slip still present at p13. Binding is tight. The standard work on the epidemic spread of witchcraft throughout Europe and the New World, first published in 1927 and written in Summers' typical extravagant style. This is the 1978 reprint and is in superb condition. See all photos - these are of the actual edition for sale. Pages are clean, bright, unmarked and unfixed almost as new. Only exception is minor scuffing on part of title page (see photo). DJ is unclipped and excellent, barely any wear. Just the very slightest of tanning at rear top and on flap. Frazer, a Scottish anthropologist, wrote this classic work on magic, mythology and religion in the late nineteenth century. This is the first abridged version, published by Macmillan in 1925. Frazer famously proposed that mankind evolves from magic through religious beliefs to scientific rationality. His controversial scrutiny of Christianity was excluded from this abridged edition. It was critically received by scholars, but widely read by many. Its influence was large, including on amongst others T S Eliot, Hemingway and Jung. Lovecraft mentions the book in The Call of Cthulhu. This is a very nice copy indeed. See all photos which are of the edition for sale. Symonds, a prolific writer in various fields, wrote four biographies of Crowley including this one in 1958. A really nice copy. An exceedingly rare, lovely copy of the 1970 Rider/Aquarian edition (first thus) of Lewis Spence's classic book on Atlantis. With a very good unclipped dust jacket, and pages which are immaculate. Spence was a Scottish folklorist and occultist, and became well known for his works on folklore, myths, legends and the occult in general. A well educated journalist, Spence researched and wrote about a range of related themes, and while he's become seen as a forerunner to many more modern writers of this ilk, he was more serious and disciplined in his approach. He looks at Atlantis and its arcane traditions of magic, alchemy, astrology and witchcraft. Largely dismissed by some as pseudo-science, Spence's book was nevertheless an important contribution to populist occult and esoteric literature. This copy is exceptionally good. A reprint of Bovet's classic 1684 text exploring witchcraft, black magic and the art of the devil. This 1975 reprint has a new introduction by Montague Summers. The book is in wonderful condition. Pages are exceptionally bright and clean with no foxing, tanning or marking. The remnant of a small pencil price tag on FEP is vaguely present. Otherwise, almost as new. DJ is unclipped and very nice indeed: no nicks at all, just a little tanning to flaps and the most minor of age wear in general. A lovely copy. 2 Volumes. Sidonia von Borcke was a noblewoman who was tried and executed for witchcraft. This, the fictionalised account of her life, was translated into English by Lady Wilde (Oscar's mother) in the mid 19th century. A very nice copy. Both volumes are present, pages are very good with no real markings or foxing at all, save for a tanned FEP on each volume. Other than that, just age wear to edges. No inscriptions. Bindings are tight. Boards are very nice, complete and just minor shelfwear. And a little corner crumpling. Original flashing on front covers still very present. A really good set.
