New York: Abbeville Press, 1999. Stated First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. Large book, square, approx 10 x 10 x 1 and 3 pounds. This beautifully illustrated volume is both a celebration of the beauty and spirit of this country and a photographic tour de force by Bullaty and her husband, Angelo Lomeo. Organized in thematic chapters, the images offer breathtaking views of wilderness and wildlife, urban centers and backwater villages, nostalgic scenes of yesteryear, and high-tech scapes of today. Text by writer-poet Robin Magowan probes the underlying vision of what the land and its people are about. "Bullaty and Lomeo began photographing as a team over 50 years ago when they first met in a dark room in New York City. Sonja Bullaty had come to America, a refugee from the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Angelo Lomeo grew up as a first generation American in Hell's Kitchen. It…

New York: W W Norton, 2003. Updated Edition. Paperback. As New. 208 pages. Tells the stories behind the photographs that won the Pulitzer. Updated to include winners through 2003. This unique photographic history of 132 pictures includes the Pulitzer winners from 1942 to 2003. Among them are Joe Rosenthal's World War II photograph of the raising of the flag over Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, Robert Jackson's photograph of Jack Ruby killing Lee Harvey Oswald. Others show the brutalities of war and racism and despotism. There are also photographs of better moments like Scott Shaw's photographs of the rescue of baby Jessica from a well. Description:
New York: William Morrow, 2001. First American edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fair. Oversize, heavy book. Beautiful photographs celebrating friendship worldwide. Exquisite color and black & white photographs by 100 talented photographers from all over the world, including several Nobel Prize winners, who answer the question, "What is a friend?" There is a double fold out showing an incredible picture of a very old woman by the side of her dead friend. That one stunned me especially, but the book if full of stunning photographs. The book is near fine as there is a small crease on one of the fold out pages, but otherwise, fine. The dust jacket is sheer and has several marks as well as a small tear on the front at the cutout for the inset photograph.

Philadelphia: Camino Books, 1999. Second printing. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. 12 x 9.8 x 1 inches; 4 pounds; 256 p. Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs. Foreword by Edward G Rendell, former mayor of Philadelphia. The auto was in its infancy, and sheep still grazed along South Broad Street. But there was a vibrancy in the air as the 20th century began, the pulse of a great city rising to meet the industrial challenges of the new age. The optimism all but jumps off the pages at you in this marvelous collection of historic photographs of Philadelphia, assembled by the Philadelphia Inquirer. They span 100 years--from Republicans gathered in Philadelphia in 1900 to nominate William McKinley for president to planning for a GOP convention in 2000; from boys registering for the draft in World War I to boys resisting the draft for Vietnam. From Connie Mack's Athletics to Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose; from such Philadelphia icons as Kate Smith, Marian Anderson, and Paul Robeson to…

Description:
Koln: Taschen, 2000. Hardcover. Good. Heavy book. 600 p With English, German, French captions. A Thousand Hounds "brings together almost 500 photographs of or about dogs, many of which have rarely been seen. Spanning over 150 years, this book chronicles the life and times of man and dog." This is an incredible book. There are photos on the front in WW I and WW II showing soldiers with dogs; shots during the Great Depression; taken in the Antarctic with the Shackleton expedition; celebrities and their dogs...and many, many more. Very likely, the majority of the photographs have never been seen by the public. An amazing collection. Book is in good condition. Sunning to cover, minor surface rubbing and edgewear, a small scratch on back cover along with a small spot where rubbed through to board (size of pencil eraser). The big flaw is the front cover's upper corner. It looks to have been 'chewed" with the tip missing and the end ragged and showing the board (missing…

Description:
New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, The Noonday Press, 1997. Second printing. Paperback. Very Good. Beautiful black & white photographs of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Roman Vishniac, a Russian Jew, started taking photographs of village life during World War I. He later moved to Germany and witnessed Kristallnacht and the anti-Jewish legislation that allowed Hitler to declare his enemies stateless and therefore unworthy of international protection. Vishniac's photographs, only a small fraction of the 16,000 he took, show us the faces of people soon to die, a world that has vanished. His photographs are beautiful, and haunting. Book is in very good condition with some shelf wear, bumping to the edges. There is a personal inscription on the inside of the front cover and the price on the back cover is crossed out with pen. The pages are clean and binding tight.
