Nevins I-60. The 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment, was a regiment of Texas volunteers assembled by Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry in August 1861. Though lesser known than the Texas Brigade (Hood's Brigade, ANV), the 8th Texas Cavalry distinguished itself at several battles during the American Civil War. In four years of service, Terry's Texas Rangers fought in about 275 engagements in seven states. The regiment earned a reputation that ranked it among the most effective mounted regiments in the Western Theater of the American Civil War.[Wikipedia].

Not in Nevins. Unusual, has a sticker on front wrap with Bond listed as Superintendent of Public Instruction in Scotland Neck, NC. There was a bitter debate between North Carolina and Virginia about the naming of the famous assault (Called Pickett's Charge to most) on day three at Gettysburg. North Carolina claimed there were more of their troops in the charge than Virginia, suffered more casualties and nastily claimed the Virginians did not carry their weight. Therefore, the charge should be titled Pettigrew's Charge, not Pickett's. A scarce work on the debate, and not too friendly!

Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1954. First. Hard Bound. Near Fine. As good as it gets./Near fine,. THE history of the famous Union cavalry raid through the heart of the Western Confederacy. The raid began April 17, 1863 at La Grange, TN and ended May 2, 1863 in Union held Baton Rouge, LA. There were 1,700 troopers in Grierson's unit comprised of the Second Iowa and the Sixth and Seventh Illinois Regiments along with a battery of two guns from the First Illinois Artillery. It must have been a very exciting hide-and-seek affair against many Confederate units out to capture them. This an excellent account.

NY: Harper, 1863. War Dated. HB. G+. Some staining, book was evidently used in the field. It must have been gifted after the War by Richardson to the Canandaigua Library, where a bookplate was added./No Jacket.. [Attribution/Manual] Believe this book's content to be not too dissimilar to other books with like title. Butterfield was credited with introducing "Taps" into service use, which may be a myth as it could have been an earlier Irish pub melody. Butterfield earned the Medal of Honor at Gaines Mill in 1862. Not in Nevins. Attribution to Major Charles A. Richardson of the 126th New York Infantry. He enlisted on 9/10/1862 in Canandaigua, NY as a first lieutenant. He was captured at Harper's Ferry during the Antietam Campaign but immediately paroled. He was wounded at Gettysburg and again at Petersburg on 6/16/1864. The latter wound caused his discharge on 9/3/1864. His unit is one of Fox's Fighting 300.
