Calderon was an English painter who initially worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style, especially the "St. John's Wood Clique," who patterned their work after the PRB. "I cannot tell you how very much sorry I am that I have not been able to get round to se your 3 pictures today. My own picture (I only have one) is so much behindhand that I have three models coming tomorrow (think of that) and plenty to do till my "show days" Saturday & Sunday..."

[Isle of Wight: n.p., 1874. Offered here is a wonderful, original and very large size albumen print made by Julia Margaret Cameron, one of the most important portraitists of the 19th Century. The photograph was made when the Du Mauriers visited Cameron at Freshwater, on the Isle of Wight, in 1874. The portrait captures May with a poignant and soft gaze, in the garden, and clutching a small assemblage of flowers. This fine albumen print, in its original card mount, measures 14 x 10 inches, and is in fine condition. Importantly, the print is inscribed and signed on the mount by Cameron: ìFrom life, registered photograph, copy right, Julia Margaret Cameron, Freshwater, Sep. 1874.î Cameron is widely considered the foremost British portrait photographer of her time. Contains rare inserted slip containing an explanation of the correct etymology of the Gaelic word, 'Pelloch' appearing on p.8, line 7. A beautiful, tall copy, very fine. Campbell was a fairly successful early 19th Century Scottish poet whose book of verse here described was quite popular.

Offered here are two superb original watercolor on illustrations on art board by Eleanor Campbell, the original and premier illustrator of the Dick and Jane books. Illustrations appear in the book, "We Come and Go," Chicago, Scott, Foresman and Co. and form appear on pages 55 and 58 of the first issue of the book. A charming pair of scenes showing the progression of Spot watching Jane and Father getting into their bright green car to go on a picnic (p. 55, full-page illustration entitled "Away We Go"), and the second (p.58) showing Jane opening the door to let the 'forgotten' Spot into the car: "Come in, Spot," said Jane. Beautifully and artfully bound in early 19th Century straight-grain black morocco featuring an elaborately gilt-stamped cover design with decorative borders around a central crown with laurel wreath and 'starburst' design; spine gilt, and all edges gilt. Pale yellow embossed floral silk endpapers. Side edges of boards with a gilt-ruled fillet wavy line, and there is a fascinating small gauffered design on the top and bottom of the gilt edges, near the spine. Featuring 17 superb hand-colored lithograph plates showing horseman poses in regal garb, some with horses, in various dressage positions (at end of text). This is a beautiful copy of a rare work on instructions for cavalry before mounting the horse, with a stunning cover.

Original decorative cover stamped in red-brown and balck by the prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer, Theodore Brown Hapgood. A very scarce title, certainly considering it was illustrated by Peter Newell, and with stunning cover design by Hapgood. No copies located on the Net at time of writing. Fine condition.

Original blue fine weave cloth with gorgeous all over gilt blocked cover design by Margaret Armstrong consisting of grapes and grape vine on a trellis, also used for spine. This model cover design appears in later Putnam titles (Morris, Tennyson, Emerson, Rossettis) however, in those later uses, clumsy lettering by another hand was employed, as per Gullans. This is the quite rare first edition of 1899, the only copy on the market as of this date. Two marks are rear cover, slight wear to corners, and margins of spine. Overall the binding is very good, and near fine in the interior. Gullans #61.

Eleven pages of full and half-page color illustrations by Walthar Caspari, delicately designed color endpapers. A fine copy in a dust wrapper that has been clipped off at the bottom, otherwise it is near fine. Book as new. A most scarce and beautiful book in this condition.

Original cloth backed color pictorial paper covered boards, color illustrated endpapers. 43pp with color illustrations every page, many whole page by Gertrude and Walther Caspari, important illustrators of the Jugendstil movement. Second printing issued just one year following the first edition. "Caspari's scale, strong contouring and striking perspective and finesse of presentation aims at both the smallest child to read and then take up and read again for years to come..." (Doderer). A superb copy, near fine.

Ashbee, and printed by him at the Guild's Press at Essex House, with assistance of Laurence Hodson "who sought to keep living the traditions of good printing re-founded by William Morris, the master craftsman, and likewise of T. Binning & J Tippett, compositors, and S. Mowlem, pressman, who came to Essex House from the Kelmscott Press to that end. Begun April, 1898; finished October, 1898." With the superb decorative bookplate of J. W. R. Borcklebank (1869-1926), noted artist and Michael. A. E. Franklin, noted collector. A fine copy, the best copy we have encountered.
