Flower Is … is the second of three books Frank made with Motomura Kazuhiko, a collector of photographs and photography books and occasional publisher, each designed by Sugiura Kohei."Flower Is … is a memorial to his daughter, Andrea, who was killed in an airplane crash in Guatemala in 1974. The book is in three "stream-of-consciousness" suites, which correspond to three different periods in the photographer's life. The first suite consists of flower photographs taken in Paris between 1949 and 1951; the second, photographs of Detroit car factories and pictures of the American South in 1955; the third and final suite, photographs of Nova Scotia taken between 1976 and 1984. Robert Frank continues to call Nova Scotia… Read More

Description:
First, only edition. Hardcover: black boards with illustrated dust jacket in protective mylar cover with green endpapers, illustrated throughout in black-and-white, unpaginated [120 pp], 8.25 x 8.5 inches, text in Japanese and English. ISBN 03720210080049. Slight foxing to first and last pages, and rear endpaper, else fine.
Yohko was published 2 years after Fukase's divorce, and is as much about loss as about the joys of life. For over 13 years, Fukase photographed his wife excessively. Yohko herself described their life together as "suffocating dullness interspersed by violent and near suicidal flashes of excitement." The narrative of the images is a collaboration between photographer and model, with Yohko, complicit and often posing for the camera. Eight years later, in 1986, Fukase would publish his iconic book, Ravens. Several of the earlier images here also appear in Ravens.

Description:
First and only edition. Linen hardcover, illustrated throughout in black-and-white, unpaginated [84 pages], 10.4 x 9 inches, essay by Koko Yamagishi.
Bukubuku is Fukase's considered to be Fukase's final major project before he suffered a debilitating accident in 1992. The series consists of self-portraits taken in the bathtub with an underwater camera. The book includes a text by Koko Yamagishi."Bukubuku (Bubbling) has been remembered among us as Masahisa Fukase's unspoken-of work, a series that had been sealed, so to speak. At the time [February 1992] there was, behind the scenes, a growing atmosphere where people had started to have misgivings about Fukase's confused and failing behaviors. Friends had started to worry about him living alone, and when before too long, the accident occurred, the whole event itself, too, was taken as an incident that characterized Fukase as a photographer. What strikes me now going through Fukase's last series of works, is how they were backed up by thorough… Read More
