A printed box-form thick card portfolio with ribbon ties (external dimensions 392 × 290 mm), containing a thin volume of text ('Croquis de Route et Notes de Voyage', [36] pages in stab-sewn printed wrappers, extensively illustrated) and a suite of 50 loose colour plates, each printed on a numbered and captioned bifolium. Description:
Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1933 [first edition]. Octavo, xviii, 378 pages plus 32 plates and front endpaper maps. Decorated cloth a little worn at the extremities, with the rear hinge worn through near the centre (but now protected with a Mylar wrapper); some foxing, particularly to the leaves adjacent to the plates; overall a decent copy. Tales of the Torres Strait islands. Inscribed, dated (September 1933) and signed by the author 'To Colin Simpson with sincere regards'. He is one of the people thanked in the author's prefatory note for 'the photographs in this book' - presumably the author Colin Simpson (1908-1983). The pencilling on one photograph, the endpaper map and one blank page are probably by him. The recently-published Idriess bibliography (October 2016) by Feain and Aroney records a print run of only 2000 copies.

Most of the photographs are of North India, in particular Kashmir (including Ladakh) and Rajasthan. Other regions well represented are South India, China, Tibet and Nepal, Siberia, the Khyber Pass and North Africa.
