Description:
There is some wear and scuffing on the book cover. The inside of the cover is stained and yellow. Pages are tanning. Previous owner's name on front inside cover.Christian philosophy is an intellectual venture which is necessarily undertaken whenever a man who is endowed with philosophical tastes, gifts, and temperament believes the Christian Faith. I use the word 'necessarily', because such a man cannot believe with the whole of his being unless he believes in a philosophical and intellectual manner. There are indeed diversities of gifts and temperaments, but of all Christians it is true that genuine personal faith must mean the deliberate surrender and dedication of the entire personality to the service of God. The philosophical type of man must thus choose between being a Christian philosopher and not being a Christian at all.

"Each year sees more and more travelers descending on the shores of the eastern Mediterranean. Of these certain proportion comes solely for the sunshine and the beachesnbut a majority, I think, are prepared, or in some cases eager, for cultural distraction. Hitherto this has been largely provided by the ruins of classical antiquity, temples and theatres, shaft graves and beehive tombs, but some among them there may be who feel a certain curiosity about the inumerable Byzantine churches which every word.the landscape; or, excited by such celebrated masterpieces as Daphne and Hosious Lukas, which are now days included in most of the package tours, would wish to know more of the civilization which produced…

We see colour on a painted surface through the reflection of light; the colour we see in a stained- glass window is from the light refracted through it. The colours of the glass are deadened by reflected light, and when darkness falls a stained-glass window cannot be brought to life." - Stained Glass

That's what folks called the oppressive temperatures that July in Texas, on the fifth day of the year's major heat wave. Unless major efforts to irrigate were underway, you could not find a spot anywhere that held any moisture. Not the time to be working on a hot tar roof. In this torrid condition no one felt like exerting any unnecessary energy. But, at five-thirty we still gathered, as we did most every sunny day, at the icehouse on Big Joshua Creek. It had been in operation since 1927, when my grandfather set down roots in Comal County at the verge of the Hill Country. As the name implies, Granddad started out selling ice in big blocks, out of the two huge walk-in coolers in the back. Sometime in the…

"William Glendinning pressed a razor against his pulsing throat and awaited the worst. He did not even try to pray, that recourse having failed since he had first sunk into despondency more than a year earlier, in 1784. For the likes of him, he knew, there could be no mercy now, even though heaven's gate once had seemed within his reach. Only a few years after emigrating to the Chesapeake in 1767, Glendinning had been saved, plucked by his conversion to Methodism and the call to preach from an obscure, rootless lot as a journeyman tailor. A sawed-off, scrawny Scot whose speech rolled off his tongue in a thick burr, he struck Methodist leaders as less choice a recruit than the…

In nine cases out of ten when you go to the dictionary it is to find how to spell a word or how to divide it at the end of the line. If you do want to uncover some of the finer shades of meaning, usually only the unabridged dictionary will answer...." - Foreword from 20,000 Words: Dictionary, Spelling, Divided, Accented, Reference, 20,000
