Hodgkin, (and others), London, 1710, first edition; 8vo, 125 x 200mm; pp xxxi, 384, [xvi, being Content and Errata]; panelled calf, lacks front board, back board and spine rubbed and worn; first two signatures (2 x 16pp) loose and the first and last few sheets frayed at the edges though with no loss of text; the balance of the book block is mostly firm and is generally clean although with some light browining or foxing. Contemporary signature, John Townsend, on the title page. Fair to poor copy as is but a reasonable candidate for repairing and rebinding.

Loosely inserted are a leaflet for Kapa Press publications, a marketing card for this book and a couple of visiting cards, one of them for Papagapitos.

Murray, London, 1853, first edition; volume I only, of two; 8vo, 150 x 220mm; pp xv, 425; frontispiece, 20 (one of these, 'Abyssinian Travelling', being present as a modern facsimile) wood engraved plates or other illustrations and a large folding map of Abyssinia and Nubia to illustrate Parkyns's journey; dull green cloth titled gilt on the spine; somewhat shaken and the binding a little loose in places in consequence; pages variously browned; the plates show damp or water staining and the map is torn along some of the folds and roughly repaired with narrow brown paper tape - altogether although complete (note comment re facsimile plate) and suitable as a reading or binding copy. ... ... ... ... Martyns travelled extensively over what is now Eritrea and Ethiopia between 1843 and 1846 and in those travels repeated some of James Bruce's travels almost a century earlier and confirmed some of Bruce's earlier observations.
