Description:
Madrid: A. Fortuny, 1883. Sabater, V.. An extensive panorama stretching across forty pages, which folds out to show the royal procession making its way from the Royal Basilica of Atocha to the Palace on the wedding day of the King of Spain, Alfonso XII, and his second wife, Maria Christina of Austria. A retinue of guards, musicians, and members of the royal family all lead the way for the new King and Queen, who can be seen peeking out the window of their carriage. Printed by chromolithography in full color, with shimmering gold and silver decoration on the stately horses, carriages, and military uniforms. Each group in the procession is labeled in Spanish, and the pages of the panorama are backed with silk for strength. In its original crimson leather portfolio bearing the King and Queen's intertwined initials, surmounted by a crown, gilt edge decoration, and intricate dentelles. Portfolio bears a red and gold label with a crown on the front cover. Minor soiling on the inside of the cover where a…

Description:
Woodmere, NY: Pardes Rimonim Press, 1987. Cohen, Claudia. Octavo. (281)pp. One of 100 copies. Eighty woodcuts inset to the text, all recut after those appearing in the original 1546 edition of Sahula's work, printed in Venice. Sahula, active in the 13th century, produced this work of fables as a specifically Jewish, moralistic counterpoint to other popular, lighter medieval tales, of the likes of Sinbad the Sailor. Cleverly structured as an argument between a Cynic and a Moralist, the narrative relies, in part, on scientific material to uphold the main virtues of wisdom, penitence, sound counsel, humility, and reverence. Printed in Hebrew, in black with blue initial. In the publisher's binding by Claudia Cohen of quarter blue morocco with giltwork to spine and pale paper over boards. Fine.

Description:
Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 2013. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Oblong elephant folio. (14)ff., accordion-fold. One of thirty-six copies. Printed in silver ink, with illustrations of elephants, on deep red handmade paper. The text is a poem written in Thai, and an English translation is provided on a separate sheet of paper accompanying the book. In Thailand for many centuries, rare white elephants were captured and tamed whenever they were discovered, in order to be presented to the king. In the Introduction to the book, Kaldewey explains that the elephants were presented to court in a ceremony that included music and dance. "For each of them the court poet composes a special welcoming lullaby," one of which is presented here. The lullaby compels the elephant not to miss her past in the forest, as "There is much discomfort in the forest, but bliss reigns in the city... Blame no one, for your fate as the royal elephant has been decided by Brahma himself. The gods deem you fit for His Majesty, and we will…

Description:
(Bern, Switzerland, 1974. Scapa (a.k.a. Ted Schaap). Fifteen original illustrations of perhaps gouache, each on a separate sheet of heavy paper. Mainly concerned with the meteoric rise of computing, and particularly that of IBM, Schaap's illustrations depict with snide humor the new computer worker, the techno-bureaucrat, at work pinning (literally) IBM all over the globe, sitting in traffic, dictating to his secretary the way he might write computer code, and still yet relying on paper. The illustrations apparently never reached publication, though their thematic link to the 1974 portfolio Schaap produced through his publishing firm, Benteli, suggests that Schaap was engaged in some sort of cohesive project on IBM and computing. It is possible that he had IBM in mind as the ultimate outlet for the work-he contributed freelance designs to Swatch, among other corporations-though it is unclear whether the company would have been game for Schaap's tongue-in-cheek style. Regardless, the illustrations…

Description:
Bern, Switzerland: Benteli, 1974. Scapa (a.k.a. Ted Schaap). Folio. Three silkscreen prints + informational sheet. The three prints address the enormous rise of computing in the 1970s, at the helm of which was IBM. In his characteristically cartoonish, colorful, and jocular style, Schaap depicts office workers contending with computing equipment: one waters a growing tree of cords, another has slung a hammock between two computer towers, and in the last image, two men cryptically debate the merits of tower A versus tower B. The accompanying sheet of text provides a biographical sketch of Schaap, listing his many accolades as a designer, artist, and television host. The laudatory tone suggests that the sheet is something of a resumé, by which Schaap could present the folio to various outlets for consideration. Indeed, the mild humor is reminiscent of what one might find in the New Yorker, and certainly recalls Schaap's long history with the Dutch weekly "Nebelspalter." It is possible Schaap sent a…
