Construction began in 1963 and the Trail was complete and designated as a National Recreation Trail April 13, 1982. The plant and animal communities are used by local school districts for environmental education. (I do not know if this continues today). There are two main sections: the first is a guide to the trail. There are 22 stations along the trail marked with narrative descriptions in this booklet.
