London: J. & C. Walker, March 31st, 1837.. Map dimensions 134.5 x 98 cm, overall 143 x 100 cm. Large folding geological map with a cross-section of southern England from Land's End to the German Ocean across the lower margin, all vividly coloured according to the strata, scale: 10 miles to 1 1/8th inch, the map divided into 36 sections and mounted on linen, textured paper to the folded end sections, folds into the original purple embossed cloth slipcase with a gold lettered paper label to the upper panel. Slight discolouration to the case, otherwise this and the map in very good condition. The map was first published in 1835 and was frequently updated and reissued using fresh evidence gathered from geological fieldwork. It has been suggested that up to nine states had appeared by 1838. This is an intermediate state with Knipe's name excised from the title, but with the Walkers' address given as No. 9 Castle Street, Holborn.

The whole dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen. Folds between original green cloth covers decorated in gilt to the upper board with the emblem of Letts & Son, plain green paper to the folded end section and to inner cover of map. Covers worn at joints, green paper on end panel slightly chipped. Some light offsetting, otherwise very good.

The whole dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folds between original brown cloth covers, publisher's gilt crest to upper board. Publisher's advertisements to paste down and to folded end section on linen verso of the map, the former partially covered with a contemporary engraved ownership plate. Small old annotation to upper left margin sometime obscured with white paint, another just within the upper left corner of the map also obscured. Slight wear to head and foot of spine of covers. A lovely bright example of the map.

Some light rubbing to the covers, the map paper slightly toned, very good overall. This edition pre-dating the construction of the line between Strood and Dover which appeared in the 1850s.

[2] 4to. (ii), xii, 776, (2), x pp. Black and white map of the country based on the large map plus a colour folding plate with cross sections of principal navigable rivers and canals across England. Matching recent green moiré cloth for the binding and the book-style box housing the map, twin gilt lettered maroon morocco spine labels. Very much a Yorkshire affair, the large map was produced in concert by Walker, a local surveyor, Priestley and the publisher Nichols - the three jointly dedicating it to the King at the foot of the map. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1687.. Fifth impression, 12mo, (xii), 309, (1) pp, lacking a final blank. Vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre to title page, contemporary inscription to the half title with another of a similar vintage mostly obscured to the fly leaf verso. Contemporary sheep with some wear, recently rebacked. Master of University College, Walker had been forced to travel during the interregnum and continued his travels during the restoration as well as publishing a number of books. Declaring himself a Catholic during James II's reign, he lost his status once more after the Glorious Revolution. ODNB describes him as "...one of the most productive scholars of Restoration Oxford", adding "his ghost is reputed to haunt staircase 8 of University College". Wing W403. First published 1672.
