London: The Francis Bacon Society, 1949. Original issues. Very Good+. Baconiana, first published in 1886, is the literary journal of the Francis Bacon Society, which sustains and promotes the study and appreciation of the many works of Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), English philosopher and statesman, who served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England He led the advancement of both natural philosophy and the scientific method and his works remained influential even in the late stages of the Scientific Revolution He has been called the father of empiricism He argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive reasoning and careful observation of events in nature He believed that science could be achieved by the use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves Although his most specific proposals about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have long-lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and… Read More

Description:
N: Garden City Publishing, Co, 1954. Early reprint of 1923 original. Hardcover. Very Good/Poor. Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810 - 1891) was an American showman, businessman and politician remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus with James Anthony Bailey. He was also an author, publisher and philanthropist, although he said of himself: "I am a showman by profession ... and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me." According to Barnum's critics, his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers." The adage "there's a sucker born every minute" has frequently been attributed to him, although no evidence exists that he had indeed coined the phrase. This  copy i very good in gray cloth with black titles on the spine and the front cover.  The binding is sound but there is minor scuffing at the spine ends and the rear cover edge.  The text shows slight age toning, but it otherwise unmarked and undamaged.  There is an ink gift inscription and the name of… Read More

Description:
New York: The Ma, 1954. First Printing. Hardcover. Good/Good. Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838 - 1883), better known by his stage name "General Tom Thumb", was an American with dwarfism who achieved great fame as a performer under circus pioneer P. T. Barnum.  Full grown, Stratton was just 2'11" tall.  Under Barnum's management, Stratton became a wealthy man. He owned a house in the fashionable part of New York and a steam yacht, and he had a wardrobe of fine clothes. He also owned a specially adapted home on one of Connecticut's Thimble Islands. When Barnum got into financial difficulty, Stratton bailed him out. Later, they became business partners. Stratton made his final appearance in England in 1878. This copy is good in blue cloth with red titles on the spine and red and gilt design on the front cover.  It is ex-library, with typical library stamps and markings, but the binding is sound.  Minor fraying at the bottom edges.  Other than the library stamps the text is clean and unmarked. … Read More

Whether we view it in religious, social, political, or economic terms, Christianity has deeply and integrally influenced the Western worldview and way of life, as well as our most basic notions of selfhood, morality, and ethics. Without the presence and role of Christianity, our world would be considerably different. As such, understanding Christianity is fundamental to understanding our civilization, our culture, and our origins. 24 lectures on 12 CD's Two CD volumes plus the accompanying course guidebook. Kansas City: Andrews and McMeel, 1993. First. Softcover. Very Good +. Victor Juhasz. From the publisher: "Modeled on the work of Victorian novelist Wilkie Collins, this serial cliffhanger follows Mason Devereaux, a once-great, hard-drinking British actor, who becomes involved in the case of an on-stage murder." Roger Ebert (1942 - 2013) was an American film critic, film historian, journalist, essayist, screenwriter, and author. He was a film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. Ebert was known for his intimate, Midwestern writing voice and critical views informed by values of populism and humanism.  Writing in a prose style intended to be entertaining and direct, he made sophisticated cinematic and analytical ideas more accessible to non-specialist audiences.  In 1975, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.
