A rare, evidently unrecorded guide on "Trimming and Preparing Pelts," "cleansing and bleaching," and all sorts of other tanning methods. Not located on OCLC or at AAS as of January 2024.

New York: Published for the Author by C.T. Geslain, 1828. [3], [1 blank] pp. Music only, unaccompanied by words. Disbound. Lithograph portrait of Calhoun by Endicott. Some spotting, two repaired closed tears with cloth tape [no text loss]. Good+. This item dates from the early years of George Endicott's lithography firm. He began business in New York in 1828. From 1834 until 1841 he was partners with Moses Swett in the firm Endicott and Swett; in 1841 his brother William joined him. Until Calhoun became a committed Southern Rights advocate, he was a serious contender for the Presidency. His transformation from American Nationalist to Southern Sectionalist-- and his abandonment of any rational hope for the Presidency-- was illustrated most dramatically in his support for South Carolina's Nullification of the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832.

Signature on front flypaper of Stephen Frontis, early member of the North Carolina Synod's Centre Presbyterian Church. Good+. The Calvinistic Magazine, a Presbyterian publication, was printed from 1827 to 1830 and from 1845 through 1850, when it merged into the Weekly Presbyterian Register. "The Calvinistic Magazine attained a reputation and an influence of great value to the Church at a time when something of its kind seemed especially needed. Some objected that it was too controversial and belligerent; but it suited a period of polemics, when Arminians had become very aggressive in their attacks on the Presbyterian faith and order. Philadelphia: L.N. Rosenthal, 1861. Broadside, hand colored lithograph, oblong 8-5/8" x 4-3/4." Very Good. Camp Brightwood was organized at the beginning of the Civil War in Washington DC. The Rosenthal Company consisted of four Polish-born Jewish brothers who immigrated to Philadelphia: "Louis, Morris, Simon, and Max Rosenthal. Max Rosenthal (1833-1918), who was skilled in etching, illustration, and lithography, was the artistic backbone of the group ... Max Rosenthal became a partner with his older brother Louis in a printing business, and they were soon joined by Morris and Simon. Louis was a publisher and printer, and Morris and Simon branched into other parts of the business. Max became well known as a lithographer and, after his retirement in 1884, devoted his attention to teaching, mezzotint engraving, and oil painting. n.p., 1848. An off-white soft paste mug. Transfer images are quite nice with crisp details. Some light discoloration. Three-way crack and stain in base. Some old glue on the bottom of the mug. Overall, Good+. We have located a few variations of this mug in both soft paste and china. Not much is known about the mugs other than they are campaign mugs and scarce.

[Indianapolis?, 1872. 4pp, Disbound with some loosening, caption title [as issued]. Printed in double columns. Good+. An exposure of profligacy and corruption by Indiana's Democratic Party and its administration of the State. "It is safe to say that there is not much in the State Treasurer's head when he shakes it, unless it be the recollection of" various financial crimes committed by his Democratic colleagues.

[offered with] FREMONT CAMPAIGN ENVELOPE, Fremont portrait in upper left, New Haven postal cancel and three cent stamp, addressed to Rev. Stephen Hubbell of North Stonington CT. Spotting into portrait. Good.

Washington: Ritchie & Heiss, 1848. 26 issues, each 16pp and printed in three columns per page. 9-3/4" x 15." 416 pp. Paginated continuously. The first issue [May 31, 1848] is browned, chipped at outer margins, several closed tears, loss of several letters. The second issue [June 7, 1848] has unsightly brown spots on the first three leaves. Otherwise, a generally clean text with occasional minor wear. Issue No. 25 is dated November 1, 1848. Issue No. 26, the final one, dated April 11, 1849, reports the bad news for the Whigs, the delay in publication caused by confusion over the returns from Florida and Texas. Good to Good+. Cass, the powerful Michigan Senator, author, and statesman, later originated the Popular Sovereignty Doctrine. Although he lost his bid for the Democrats' 1844 nomination, he was successful in 1848 but beaten in the general election by the Mexican War hero Zachary Taylor. Cambridge, 1865. Original printed front wrapper, with reinforced spine. 36pp. A clean and Very Good item. A former Whig Governor of Massachusetts, Washburn was a respected legal scholar who wrote this pamphlet in early 1865, just before the end of the War. He makes a close examination of the formation of the Union, with appropriate precedents from American and English law, and concludes that a State has no power to secede. He discusses the implications of that conclusion for a constitutional policy of Reconstruction. FIRST EDITION. Bartlett 5695. II Harv. Law Cat. 872.

Eaton was a Tennessee friend and ally of President Andrew Jackson, who appointed him Secretary of War. Eaton's wife, the daughter of a tavern keeper, was the victim of the most politically significant social snobbery in our history. The extraordinary events brought down Jackson's Cabinet and engendered Jackson's lifelong enmity to Vice President Calhoun, possibly costing the latter the Presidency. The pamphlet is Eaton's emotional defense of his wife, and his outraged assault on his foes. Calhoun's wife-- followed by other Cabinet wives-- refused to associate with Peggy Eaton, on the ground that she was a loose woman, unfit to mingle with them. One entry reads: "Monday, 20th September...Dreadful cries and flogging as usual at day-light...very ill; taking medicine; still in solitary confinement...horribly afraid.
