Description:
New York: Pup Press / Birth Press, 1959. First printing. Stapled wrappers. Very good. (20) pp., 8vo. Stapled into printed wrappers. The first of apparently three publications of the Poets Union Press, affiliated with Tuli Kupferberg's Birth magazine and press (the others being books of poems by Steve Tropp and Kupferberg). Poems interspersed with quotations attributed to Pound, Whitman, Williams, Sherwood Anderson, J.P. Morgan, and others. Who was Bill Godden? There's little trace online, but he seems also to have had a connection to the visual arts, as he designed the cover for Birth 3 (announced in the back of this book), and is presumably the same person who wrote the essay on painter Raymond Parker for B.H. Friedman's Grove volume School of New York: Some Younger Artists, and who appears with James Baldwin, Norman Mailer, Ted Joans, Shel Silverstein and others in a widely linked Fred McDarrah photo of a gathering in Robert Cordier's apartment to discuss "The Death of the Beat Generation." Light…

Description:
Portland, OR: Author, 2012. Original work. 4 x 5.25 inches. Unique artist's book, titled, signed, and dated on the spine. Fine condition. Artist Gabriel Liston, whose paintings typically depict an unsentimental view of the world of children's experience, creates these one-of-a-kind "book tiles" by sewing shut copies of cheaply made commercial children's books (all from the same series), sealing them with acrylic medium, and painting images in a blue reminiscent of Delft tiles. Liston maintains the book tiles' tenuous connection with their origin by typically taking the title from a caption in the book, and by sanding away tiny areas to allow the original cover coloration to show through.
