Description:
Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1915. First Edition. 4to (260 x 195 mm). Frontispiece portrait of the collector, 329 pp. Text with some foxing. Bound in original quarter morocco (head of spine chipped), top edge gilt. NOT EX-LIBRARY. Catalogue of incunabula from the John Boyd Thatcher collection, deposited with the Library of Congress in 1910. The catalogue is groundbreaking on account of the copy-specific descriptions of BINDINGS and PROVENANCE, which were almost never recorded in incunabula catalogues at this early date. With a long biographical sketch of the collector. From the famed bibliographical library of B.H. Breslauer (sale of the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslauerana, Third Portion, 2005, lot 1300).

Description:
New York: New York Public Library, 1919. First Edition. 4to (265 x 190 mm). xxiv, 245 pp. Contemporary buckram (soiled; spine label chipped and defective), original blue printed wrappers bound in. One of 100 copies on fine Old Stratford paper. This, the famed "First Census," records Incunabula not only in American libraries, but in private collections in the U.S. Copies of the ordinary trade edition of the "First Census" are common, but the fine paper issue of 100 is scarce in private ownership. George Parker Winship provides a long account of the development of the project, which is briefly recounted by Goff in his "Third Census." The work was "Compiled by a Committee of the Bibliographical Society of America," but much of the data was gathered and organized by WOMEN, namely Maude E.C. Covell, Miss Edith Brinckmann, and her successor, in 1909, Miss Margaret W. Righter. Incidentally, Brinckmann had already catalogued much of the Copinger-Widener Collection of incunabula at the Free Library of… Read more

Large 4to (285 x 210 mm). 351, [1] pp. Title-page printed in red and black, frontispiece portrait of Aldus Manutius. 141 works described, each with one or more accompanying illustrations in color. Original green cloth (trifle shelf-wear), Aldine dolphin and anchor on front cover printed in gold. Edition limited to 500 copies, now scarce in commerce. The indespensable monograph which accompanied the sensational exhibition "Aldus Manutius: A Legacy More Lasting than Bronze" held at The Grolier Club 25 February - 25 April 2015. The majority of the items in the exhibit came from the private collections of G. Scott Clemons and H. George Fletcher. The preface and descriptions were written by Clemons and Fletcher (the latter wrote the essays "Jean Grolier, Aldus Manutius, and the Aldine Press" and "Jean Grolier's 1514 Aldine Virgil on Blue Paper." With an extensive bibliography and three indices. The book was designed by Jerry Kelly, who also… Read more

Cologny-Geneve (Switzerland): Fondation Martin Bodmer, 1976. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. 239, [1] pp. With 38 reproductions in the text. Original yellow glazed boards. NOT ex-library! This, the third catalogue issued by the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana, is a tour-de-force of some of the finest incunables ever assembled by a private individual, Martin Bodmer (1899-1971). The present catalogue gives very fullsome descriptions of 268 incunables plus one blockbook; many useful indexes are included. Incredibly, a complete catalogue of all of Bodmer's fifteenth-century books has yet to be published. B.H. Breslauer copy, with his note concerning the Durer "Apocalypsis" (No. 143) written in ink on first blank leaf. Purchased at the sale of the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (Christie's New York, 2005, lot 1478).

Early ownership inscription (in Italian) on the first blank in pencil, some penciled notes in the margins. A used copy in good condition. NOT ex-library! Of these 35,232 copies, 28,491 were owned by institutions, and 6,741 were then in private hands. Rio de Janeiro: [Editorial Imperio, Lisbon, for]: Ministerio da Educacao e Cultura, 1956. First Edition. Very good. 4to. 1 f. (blank), [5], 9-377, [8] pp. With 9 plates. Original publisher's stiff wrappers printed in black and red, edges uncut (spine darkened and with one small stain; some minor soiling to covers). NOT ex-library! Important and extremely detailed catalogue of 187 incunables from the BN Rio de Janeiro. "Handsomely printed in Portugal from type specially made in England, this compilation meticulously collates 187 items. Following the example of major catalogues of incunabula, particularly the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke, the author gives all the data that should be necessary to identify the volumes concerned and to compare them with other known copies. Details on place, date, pagination, type and provenance when known are followed by excerpts from selected pages" (B.M. Woodridge in: Romance Philology, vol. XIII, no. 1, August 1959, pp. 94-5). Description:
Paris: Librairie Thomas-Scheler, 1994. First Edition. Very good. Folio. 50 items described and illustrated. Original wrappers. Price-list loosely inserted as issued. An extraordinary catalogue of 50 incunables which includes many great rarities, i.a. the first edition of Homer in Greek (Florence, 1488 -- Doheny copy). The price-list has been annotated by B.H. Breslauer: the published prices total FF 5,743,000 -- not including 9 items Prix Sur Demande which he estimated to be ca. FF 4,500,000 -- and thus the entire catalogue amounts to more than FF 10,000,000 (an impressive sum in 1994). We have seen other instances whereby B.H. Breslauer added up all the asking prices in a single bookseller's catalogue, not only as a pastime but as an expression of his intense competition, even though he had few rivals. From the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (sale at Christie's NY, 2005, lot 1275).

Austin, TX: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1974. First Edition, Second Impression, limited to 250 copies. Near Fine. 8vo. 29 pp. Title-page printed in black and orange. Original burnt-orange colored boards, original clear protective wrapper. NOT ex-library! A very useful and very readable account of the evidence -- and lack thereof -- supporting the argument that Johann Gutenberg was effectively the first "modern" printer in the West. Goff writes with authority, having been compiler of the indispensable "Third Census" of Incunabula in American Libraries. It is instructive to recall that by the end of the 15th century, "printing had been introduced into no less than 238 European communities and more than 1100 individual printers are known to have been operating these equally numerous presses during this 39-year interval" (p. 21). Designed by William R. Holman, this is one of 250 copies according to the colophon.

Barcelona: Imprenta-Escuela de la Casa Provincial de Caridad, 1945. First Edition. Very good. Small 4to. vi, 130 pp., illustrated. Original printed wrappers (a little worn, some dust-soiling). Essential catalogue of 724 incunables, the Catalonian imprints particularly well described, with extensive bibliographic references for each entry, and with numerous illustrations in the text. There is no digital surrogate for this catalogue (or the 1967 Supplement), nor has it been superceeded as we learn from the Bibl. Univ. de Barcelona's own website: "Currently, a large portion of the incunabula collection awaits recataloguing. Oxford: University Press, 2005. First Edition. COMPLETE SET of all 6 vols., comprising more than 2,965 pages (sic!) printed in two- and three-columes. Original publisher's blue cloth (some scuffing to cloth covers), ISBN stickers on lower right corner of back covers. Vertical creasing on half title of volume III, occasional signs of use / thumbsoiling, but overall the contents are clean, fresh, and unspoiled. NOT ex-library! Complete sets are rare in private ownership; only two complete set have appeared action, and this was one of them -- the other one sold at Swann in 2013. "Bod-Inc," as it is affectionately -- and reverentially -- known, is so epic that it scarcely warrants any discussion whatsoever. Suffice it to say that more than 5,600 incunables are EXHAUSTIVELY described, with detailed listings of the contents of EACH EDITION. Description:
Edinburgh: [Printed for the EBS by George Waterston & Sons], 1913. First Edition. Very good. 4to. [8], 107 pp. Printed on fine, thick paper watermarked: "The Post Horn Vellum" / [within a shield: a post horn]. Original cloth, title gilt on upper cover, corners bumped, some minor soiling, front and back endpapers a little browned, t.e.g., others untrimmed. COPY NUMBER TWO OF 20 COPIES, reprinted from vol. Beattie was Keeper of Printed Books at the National Library of Scotland (1931-1953) and then Librarian (1953-1970). In 1986-88 the NLS acquired his collection of bibliography and bibliographical papers (now "William Beattie Collection"). It is unclear how Breslauer came into contact with Beattie, and what he did to… Read more

Description:
Athens, 1983. First Edition. Very good. Large 8vo. [15], 84, [4] pp. With 33 illustrations in the text. Original printed wrappers (slightly separating from textblock inside front joint, but perfectly sound). An attractive copy. NOT ex-library: the text is unblemished and free from stamps and ugly markings! Scarce, well illustrated catalogue, published under the auspices of the Centre for Neohellenic Research, National Hellenic Research Foundation. As the title indicates, the present work provides a detailed assessment of the incunables in the NL of Greece. The work expands on the research undertaken by Legrand ("Bibliographie Hellenique," 4 vols., 1885-1906) and Dennis Rhodes ("Incunabula in Greece" 1980). It is of the greatest interest that detailed collations of each edition are provided, as well as provenance information. Descriptions of the books follow the language of the publication, to wit: Latin titles and non-Greek names are transcribed in Roman letters; Greek titles in Greek, as are the… Read more
